Ring in the New Year by celebrating big in a small space!

Create a fun New Year’s celebration with a homemade balloon drop. Kids can help!

For earlier bedtimes, begin at an earlier “midnight” countdown time that fits your family schedule.

Gather supplies around your home or from your discount store.

You will need:

  • Balloons
  • Garbage bag or Plastic table cover, to hold the balloons
  • Strong string
  • Tape

Make it together:
1. Choose your spot for the balloon drop: a doorway, or an open wall away from fans, lights, sharp corners, candles and breakable items. We like doorways because kids love to stand under the falling balloons.

2. Two options for the balloon pocket. A) Slit open both sides of a garbage bag, or B) Unfold the table cover. Now tape the short end (width) across the top of the doorway. Attach a string to each of the two bottom corners. Then fold the hanging end upward and tape to the top of the doorway. This makes a pocket for the balloons. The sides remain open.

3. Kids can write numbers or their names on the balloons to find after the drop. If old enough, they can blow up the balloons and place them inside the pocket.

4. The excitement begins with you and the children counting down to the new year! “10, 9, 8 …”, When the adult pulls both strings on “1” all can cheer, dance, and (safely) bat the balloons around the room!

Small space. A New Year’s Eve to remember!
