Tips to Keep Your Job Until You Decide to Leave

My first major job was assisting customers with their shoe purchases. It wasn’t my dream job, but it was a way to get some income for myself. Can you imagine having to hold your breath because the stench of some customers’ feet was so bad? I specifically remember the unpleasant smell of something like stale corn chips and sweat. The only way to relieve my nostrils was to sniff coffee beans! Needless to say, after a year of smelly feet and difficult customers, I’d had enough.

But landing a job isn’t always easy, especially if you have some barriers in your way. I knew I couldn’t quit this job until I landed a new one. I couldn’t afford to lose the income. Plus, I knew a gap in my resume would look bad to potential employers. So I had to think it through and make a plan.

THINK BEFORE YOU QUIT

Though your current job may not be your dream job, the best plan is to keep it until you land your next one. Before submitting your resignation letter, here are four tips to consider.

  • Continue to arrive at work early or on time with a pleasant attitude. Remember Maya Angelou’s quote: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Keep treating people the way you want to be treated.
  • Continue to perform your work duties well. This is key because it shows ownership on your part. You are not expecting anyone else to handle your tasks or responsibilities. Keep showing up for yourself, your co-workers, and your boss/supervisor.
  • Continue to show your boss/supervisor respect. This position may not be your dream job, but leaving a positive lasting impression can serve you well at your next job and beyond.

  • If you are being challenged with a co-worker’s behavior, write that person a personal note of encouragement. This small gesture can go a long way. We never know what a person is going through or dealing with outside of work.

Remember, you are in the driver’s seat. You are in control of your exit date. Secure your next job while you are still working at your current job — but not AT work. Then you will have a good reputation, a smooth transition, and no loss of income.
